How to Differentiate Between File Infringements and Google Delistings

Understanding Different Types of Takedown Requests

MUSO manages two main types of takedown requests, each addressing a different stage of how infringing content is accessed online.

Files

File takedowns target the source of infringing content. These include downloadable or streamable files such as videos, music, software, ebooks, and other media hosted on illegal websites.

When a file takedown is issued, MUSO sends a DMCA takedown request to the infringing website requesting the removal of the infringing material directly from the hosting site.

Search Engines (Google)

Google delistings focus on the discoverability of infringing content rather than the files themselves. These takedowns target search results displayed on Google when users search for your content (e.g. songs, films, or books).
Takedown requests are submitted directly to Google, aiming to remove links to infringing pages from search results so they are harder for users to find.

Summary

In essence, File takedowns remove the infringing content at its source, while Google delistings reduce its visibility in search engines. Both work together to protect your content and limit access to illegal versions online.
